Jesus Prays in Distress Before His Arrest
Welcome to Day 311 of our journey with Jesus. Today, we see what happened when people met Jesus. The main truth for today is this: Jesus prays in deep distress and chooses to obey the Father as he faces suffering and death. Let’s begin.

See what happened when people met Jesus.
Yesterday Jesus interpreted His death as covenant sacrifice; today Gethsemane shows what continuing toward that death costs Him.

Watch the companion video, then continue reading to examine the biblical testimony in its full context.
Jesus goes to the Mount of Olives, and His disciples follow. He tells them to pray that they may not enter into temptation, then withdraws and kneels in prayer.
Father, If You Are Willing.
Jesus asks that the cup be removed from Him. Luke does not portray Him as emotionally untouched by what lies ahead. The suffering is real enough to be brought honestly before the Father.
Not My Will, but Yours.
The prayer does not end with escape. Jesus freely submits His desire to the Father’s will. His obedience is not the absence of anguish; it is faithfulness within anguish.
Strengthened in the Struggle.
Luke describes Jesus in agony, praying more earnestly, while an angel strengthens Him. The scene refuses every picture of courage that requires pretending pain is unreal.
Still Moving Toward the Cross.
Jesus rises from prayer and returns to the disciples. Nothing in Gethsemane makes the coming arrest good or the violence righteous, but Jesus continues toward the mission He has repeatedly said lies before Him.
Tomorrow, listen carefully to Jesus’ prayer and the submission expressed within His anguish.
